Survivors and their children - the 2nd Generation - at a Purim Party in 1966
In the middle of the death camp, whose horrors he had managed to survive, Bernard was a living witness to the horrific events we had come to commemorate. Bernard [Dreihorn] was talking to 21 year old Richard from the Jewish Lads Brigade. He rolled up his sleeve so that Richard could photograph the tattooed number on his arm, in the very place it had first been etched into his skin.
Here were the two generations meeting; the Survivors and the children who must continue to tell their story, so that it can never be forgotten. I asked their permission before photographing this intense moment between them. The image has now become even more urgent, even more poignant, because Bernard died [in February 1994].
